More and more Americans of all political persuasions are becoming alarmed by misconduct of ICE agents, sparked by the shooting of US citizen Renee Good in Minneapolis. Police officers are held responsible for abuse of force, and ICE should be no different. Institutions gain the public trust when the public understands that those within that institution are well-trained and have to abide by certain guidelines, including the Constitution. The irony is that if the federal government worked with state and local officials to discipline some ICE agents for misconduct and focused purely on dangerous criminals, the public would trust the agency more. Until that happens, ICE will be widely perceived as illegitimate and corrupt.
