Russia has built up its military along the Ukrainian border to the extent it is capable of a full-scale invasion of the former Soviet country. Vladimir Putin has portrayed the present crisis as the fault of the West in Russian media, spreading false propaganda that the U.S. is planning an invasion of Russia via neighboring NATO countries. Putin is evil and smart, which is a dangerous combination. He will probably invade Ukraine, and NATO will then need to keep a military presence in the former Eastern bloc.
On a slightly different subject, Putin's plans for America include amplifying political divisions so as to keep America splintered, weak and lacking a common resolve. Looking around you can see that this has indeed been successful: Americans can't stand eachother because of their political leanings, and can't seem to find a way to civilly disagree on certain issues. This is by no means by accident.
