"FRANKLY, MY DEAR..."

7/1/15 The News-Dispatch & The Herald-Argus

In the wake of racially-motivated murders at Emanuel Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston by a white supremist, there has been a nationwide movement to remove the Confederate flag, considered by most Americans to be a symbol of white racism, from the South Carolina statehouse and anywhere else it may fly on public grounds. Also, online retailers eBay and Amazon have banned sales of Confederate flags on their websites. I realize some Southerners simply identify the flag with southern culture, but they should consider what the flag represents to many: slavery, secession from the United States, and the bloodshed of the Civil War. I agree it shouldn't be flown on public grounds, but I also think erasing the flag altogether from public consciousness doesn't cure racism.
