With the selection of Palin purely for political reasons, when there were plenty of more qualified and intelligent VP candidates out there, and with his campaign of calling Obama more or less a communist, terrorist, you name-it - via Fox News's "fair and balanced" team, and for just being downright crotchety and nasty personally at the debates, I would say, yep, that ship had indeed sailed.
