Of course McCain is a war hero, and he deserves respect for that. But that shouldn't give him a license to run the sort of nasty campaign that he did. If he had presented himself like he did at his concession speech, he would have done a lot better in the general election. The rest of his campaign though, especially his debate appearances, were more crumudgeonly than honorable.
